How To Surf Smartly

Your computer may be less vulnerable to viruses if you follow secure practices.

  1. Only visit the websites you trust, and only accept downloads and programs from those you can check.

  2. Avoid websites that do not have URLs that start in the https:// secure format, or invite your browser to issue a security warning.

  3. Do not accept terms and conditions of service for new programs or games without playing them first. Understand the impact that software or applications have on your operating system. Do not automatically accept the terms or permit programs to make changes to your computer without careful consideration.

  4. Do not open an email or attachment from an unfamiliar person. If something seems suspicious - like an email from a friend with a weird attachment - start a new email or social media message chain to ask your friend about it.

  5. Before downloading any free software or tools, search the web for whether it is legitimate. Many antivirus software providers have released guides or are bundled with specific removal tools designed to verify the content you download. See if others have had problems with these tools before putting your PC in harm's way.
